Talk about gender confusion - I'd a sworn this young lad was a girl. It's a great card! I have seen photos of young kids in New York around the first of the 20th century all very seriously smoking pipes!

Interesting i just read a book about the rural community change during the 17 to 19 century of France. Very likely we would only see boys in this costume only for tourist even in 1900 already, just like if we visit any exotic places now.
